VERDICT: OPTIONAL

Disclaimer: I do not own every doll featured in this lineup, so some verdicts are based on stock photos and collector consensus, rather than firsthand experience. As a result, the true verdict for certain dolls may vary once seen in person.

Dear Reader,

Is it just me or did it feel like Stylin' Birthdayz came out of nowhere? Sure there were breadcrumbs for those with time to investigate. But if you're a lay person who only relies on official MGA announcements, you may not have heard about this line until after some of the dolls were already sold out. MGA didn't spend weeks hyping it up or teasing the collection. They just kinda announced the dolls and opened the flood gates!

While I don't claim to understand marketing strategies, I can't help but wonder why this line received so little promotion. Stylin' Birthdayz is meant to celebrate Bratz's 25th anniversary. You'd think this milestone would warrant a bigger marketing rollout?!

This leads me to wonder if the lack of a campaign was the campaign. This is PURELY SPECULATION, but I think it has to do with "No Sasha, No Sales"🤫. I think the rollout of Stylin' Birthdayz is reflective of how much more aware, and sensitive MGA might be to the reactions of their fan base. After Hello Kitty Sasha, I think they've maybe pivoted to a shorter announcement-to-release window to minimize weeks of online criticism and let the dolls speak for themselves.

Whether intentional or not, the quiet rollout also (conveniently imo🙄) fed into everyone's FOMO. My immediate reaction was, "wait... when did this happen?!" And by the time I realized the dolls were dropped, Jade was already sold it. At this point, I think MGA has been relying on everyone's FOMO a little bit too heavily (Bratz and FOMO coming soon). The FOMO may have gotten the dolls into people's carts, but once the initial excitement of the surprise drop wore off, the fandom seemed to agree on one thing: the accessories were... underwhelming to say the least.

Collectors were quick to voice their criticisms of the line. The main complaints seem to revolve around the accessories. From the noncohesive T-shirts to the cheap looking jewelry, many fans felt like the extras didn't justify the doll's price tag. So, let's take a closer look!

Accessories:

Shoes

Many collectors were not impressed with the shoes, with some even describing them as "whack". A lot of people also came for Jade's heel. While it was supposed to be a candle, fans found its shape a little more suggestive than intended. The "birthday" theme was meant to be reflected throughout the dolls' designs (assuming cohesion was the goal). Somehow, it ended up being represented through these strange, desert-inspired decorative ornaments on the girls' shoes. I'm here to tell you MGA: we would've been perfectly happy with birthday tiaras and sashes. In fact, there have been some collectors who have taken matters into their own hands by successfully shaving off the cherry and whipped cream on Sasha's heels. Whether this becomes a customization trend remains to be seen, but it def lets everyone know how strong the fans felt about the original shoe design.

Purses

The idea of having the purses resemble real-life fashion designs was actually a cute one-- very Bratz of them. But what was not very Bratz of them was the execution. In the early 2000s, when Bratz was still new, they were almost known for their cloth purses and bags. Imagine how much cooler these little purses could've been if they were fabric. But that's okay, we can't look at this line without acknowledging the reality of the current toy market. We understand late-stage capitalism often breeds enshitification, and unfortunately for us, our mini fabric renditions of Prada, Balenciaga, Dior, and Gucci are sacrificed along the way. We simply don't live in an economy that would make these dolls affordable with the type of execution we desire. That being said... couldn't they have at least painted on a couple of details instead of giving us a single-color, blocky mold?!

T-shirts

We gotta talk about the T-shirts. I get they're part of the "Stylin'" aesthetic. But is anybody actually styling them? I truly believe it is safe to say, most of us would prefer a second outfit for our doll instead of a T-shirt for ourselves. WE WANT SECOND OUTFITS PLEASE. OH AND WITH ANOTHER PAIR OF SHOES if we're able to choose. I'm so sick of the single pair of shoes, especially when MGA can't bother to factory control the shoe and peg sizes to be the same across all lines. It makes the shoe of the doll almost as important as her screening, since they are almost as permanent as such.

The T-shirt idea was semi-cute when it matched shirt the doll was wearing but what are these designs for this line? They barely match the doll. i mean seriously what are the connections besides matching the color schemes of the dolls hair/outfit? The only thing that makes sense is maybe the shirt designs are representing where each girl is having their birthdayz party?? Like maybe Sasha's party is at a bowling alley hence the bowling pins. But why would Yasmin want hers at the chess club? Maybe I'm missing something.

Maybe I'm just being picky. And if that's the case, then ignore all of my rambling above. If I'm only ever allowed one complaint, then may I please ask why the Sasha T-shirt was made pre-distressed 😩 maybe I'm just getting old. Is this the equivalent of boomers asking millennials why they buy jeans with premade holes in them? Please be nice to me😂

Earrings & Necklace

Shoutout to MGA's promotional team for providing photos of the dolls without their accessories! I put together this collage to see what the girls looked like without their earrings and necklaces. The result was... well, now I'm set on ordering Stylin' Birthdayz Yasmin 😂 She is actually so beautiful and I would've missed that!

I hate the flat, one-color gold finish. It looks so cheap for some reason. I think I can speak for all of us when I saw we would've preferred the way the usual shiny gold paint they use for jewelry, instead of.. whatever this is. Even then, the silver earrings (although better in color) fall flat design-wise, at least for me. I really don't like Jade's hook earrings. Thankfully all of that can be removed, and as you can see beautiful dolls do lay underneath!!!

Meet The Dolls:

Disclaimer: I do not own every doll in this collection, so I cannot provide firsthand reviews for all of them. For the dolls I do not own, my comments and observations are based on their official stock photos and any promotional images that are publicly available, and photos other collectors have shared.

Cloe

Stylin' Birthdayz Cloe has light pink streaks in her hair and one eyebrow slit in each eyebrow. Like the rest of the Birthdayz girls, her pupils have the peppermint candy-inspired paint detail, and the same eye shape. Her lip color is a dark red, and her mouth is closed (no teeth showing).

You may be wondering if her corset top separates into 2 different pieces of clothing. It's actually a single piece. In the past, we've gotten outfits from Stylin' Jade and Goin' Out Yasmin with tanks layered over shirts/dresses that were separate pieces with the intention of mixing and matching. This is not the case with the Stylin' Birthdayz dolls.

Her purse is Balenciaga inspired, her accessories are silver, and she's the only girl in the line up whose shoes don't scream dessert. How do we know it's her birthday then MGA!?! She's giving Alice in Wonderland, not birthday. The T-shirt that she comes with features a graphic about psychic readings. I'm trying to image her wearing this outfit and joining her friends for a little trip to the local psychic for her birthday. It's an interesting concept but I just don't personally vibe with the execution.

That said, Stylin' Birthdayz Cloe does have a beautiful screening, based on her promotional pictures. This section will be updated to include a full review if I add this doll to my collection!

Jade

Stylin' Birthdayz Jade seemed to be a hit right off the bat, selling out almost immediately after the line's announcement! I can totally see why, and I'm betting it's because of those light purple highlights and light purple eyes. While I am a fan, this feels off from any Jade representation I know. While that can be refreshing in some cases, this particular time I am kinda... well, thrown off.

From what I've noticed, Stylin' Birthdayz Jade has a black rubber for a headband. This is similar to Play Sportz Jade's (Repro) purple rubberband-like headband. Before I even noticed the black headband, however, I was already thinking of Play Sportz Jade because of the way Stylin' Birthdayz Jade hair lays. I personally didn't like that about Play Sportz Jade's hair. I don't have Stylin' Birthdayz Jade, but if I ever acquire her, I will update this overview and make a separate review page just for her.

Now this Jade is obviously very different from her normal depictions. Not only does she have light purple money piece bangs and light purple peppermint-Esque eyes, she also is rocking a black lip color with a cute open mouth showing some teeth. Her purse is Dior inspired, her accessories are silver, and her heel is a candle (Happy Birthday, duh!). She's giving goth, but the t-shirt she comes with says "Bratz Rockin' Rodeo, Saddle Up!". This leads me to believe she's celebrating her birthday at some sort of rock n roll rodeo venue, though I couldn't tell because her outfit matches her hair instead of the event. Which isn't too big of a deal, it's just another example of this line lacking some cohesion.

Sasha

Stylin' Birthdayz Sasha was the only doll in the line I felt drawn to immediately, and the only doll of this collection I own so far! I LOVE Sasha in yellow, and I was captivated by her forlorn expression. I thought her outfit was the cutest of the four as well! Her little whipped cream shoes have actually really grown on me! Yasmin

Stock Photo of Stylin' Birthdayz Yasmin

Stylin' Birthdayz Yasmin has black streaks in her red/brown hair if you look closely enough! She also appears to have a lot of hair (always a plus). Her eyebrows are bleached and very light, while her eyes match her reddish-brown hair. They almost seem to glow! She has the same peppermint eye candy detail as the others, and the same eye shape.

I didn't realize how beautiful this Yasmin was until I saw her without her hideous jewelry! I think her face is actually the cutest of the bunch, but I won't know for sure until I get her! Not only is her screening beautiful, but her little beauty mark is in the shape of a heart. This detail reminds me of Scorchin' Yasmin's star-shaped beauty mark!

Her lip color is "Mocha Cherry", her mouth is open and her teeth are showing. Her purse is Gucci-inspired, her accessories have that flat yellow/gold finish, and she has cupcakes at the bottom of her heels. Her T-shirt has the "Bratz Chess Club, Checkmate!" graphic. I mean it's pretty obvious she's headed to the chess club for her birthdayz, couldn't ya tell!? (sarcasm) (and you know guys; I don't even know if that's the link between the t-shirts and the dolls lol don't come for me👀).

Final Thoughts

So where do I land on Stylin' Birthdayz? Honestly the "Optional" verdict is the most accurate. I will never tell you not to buy a doll you're drawn to! This line overview ended up being so long because these dolls were a mixed bag, both in design and reception wise.

To me, Stylin' Birthdayz feels more experimental than traditional Bratz. This line is a lot more whimsical than other lines, mainly because of the dessert shoes and peppermint candy eye detail. Whether those choices work for you is entirely subjective, but I bet my last dollar that this line will be remembered for these distinctions.

Omg imagine 20 years from now, everyone is demanding MGA make a reproduction of this line😂. Questionable accessories aside, these dolls are beautiful and seemingly well executed. Of course, I only have Stylin' Birthdayz Sasha at the moment but will update if anything changes!
